This book provides valuable tools for everyday situations and it a huge asset to children and parents alike. I found myself implementing the techniques both with my children and in my own daily life. My children benefit from Mr. Sissel's visits to their classrooms, and I will definitely be gifting this book to everyone I know! Many thanks from Hayden and myself, for the awesome book study group on your book "Seriously, Dad"! I have been teaching him what I feel is one of Life's most important lessons 'It's not what happens to us in Life that defines us; it's how we look at it and what we choose to do about it.' Your book and the accompanying study re-emphasize this fact. It teaches kids now to CONTROL THEY WAY THEY THINK about things, and CHANGE THEIR 'LENSE' to look for postive solutions in the midst of adversity! The emphasis on the importance of self-talk, honesty, and open commuication with parents is so valuable. Most importantly... this book teaches kids how to live a good life, make good choices, and control their own destiny and happiness. Thanks, Mike!
Mike does an incredible job of providing us with a resource to teach students social and emotional skills in a very practical way. His book Seriously, Dad is structured in a workbook format. I really appreciate how the chapters are broken down into weeks, which promotes for individuals to truly internalize the content and to put it into action in their lives. I also appreciate how the book is written as a conversation between a girl and her father, which subtly encourages dialogue between kids and their parents. I would love to see all kids read this book and participate in the thought provoking activities. I am confident that as a result reading this book students will be better equipped to move forward to lead positive and productive lives.
As an educator and coach for teens, I was eager to read, "Seriously, Dad?" by Mike Sissel. When it arrived I began reading and by the end of the first chapter, I was a believer. Mike has a special way of making potentially scary, but really important conversations, easy. I like how he encourages the reader to treat this book like a journal/workbook rather than a quick read that you put away when you are done. Mike's writing style allows for parents/educators to feel as though they are receiving personal coaching from Mike as they take their child on the important journey towards Emotional Intelligence. I highly recommend this book for all people who work with and love teenagers. I will refer to it time and time again.

I absolutely loved it from beginning to end so much so, that I had to read it through twice!! Initially, I was under the impression that this book would be entirely geared toward very young adolescents and their parents, but after reading, I realized how age universal the themes that the book addressed were. I am halfway through my sophomore year in college and I could still relate AND learn from just about every topic covered within the book. The dialogue format was incredibly refreshing and I think added a more intimate and relate-able connection between the readers and the voices of the father and daughter. Instead of getting the impression of being lectured or spoken AT by the author, the reader is given the opportunity to be in a "fly on the wall" position as they listen to the interactions of a father-daughter pair.
Mike Sissel understands how the lenses we use to view the world affect our psyches. He knows that learning to control those lenses can change our lives and the lives of those around us. The tools Mike shares in this book are the same ones he discusses in his popular leadership program. Mike’s took kit doesn’t just benefit teens who are struggling with unhappiness and self-doubt. All teenagers, even those who seem to be on top of the world, will benefit from this easy-to-read book that lends itself to discussion.
This book should be required reading in every middle school/junior high and high school! If it were, the positive changes we’d seen in our youth would be phenomenal!

There's nothing quite as special as seeing a teen turn from a distant, grumpy, or aggressive one-of-the-pack, to an independent, compassionate, engaged, emotionally and personally responsible leader... and this transformation really can happen using Mike's ideas and language (and a ton of patience, love and perseverance). At least flip thru the book so you can feel how well Mike 'feels' the kids, and connects with them, so he can lead kids to a more positive, independent, loving future.
